Eggxistence

A survival game where you must ensure the survival of yourself, your family, and your community.

What is Eggxistence?

Eggxistence is a survival game in which you must ensure not only your own survival but also the survival of your family and the larger community. You play as the leader of a colony of space owls on a distant planet in the far reaches of space.

The game aims to demonstrate the existentialist approach to game design detailed in my master’s thesis.

Lineage game mechanic

The structure and progression of Eggxistence builds upon its lineage game mechanic.

To ensure the survival of the family lineage through time, the player must develop relationships with the NPCs of his community.

Once a romantic relationship is established between the player character and a NPC, they can procreate and give birth to a progeny. If the player character dies, the player then plays as his progeny.

Permadeath

If the player character dies, he is permanently removed from the game and so are the resources in his inventory. Furthermore, the player character has a limited lifespan, and therefore is destined to die at some point in the game.

Crafting system

The player can combine together the scarce resources he finds to craft technologies that will help him gather more resources.

Emergent open world

Eggxistence is designed as a non-linear systemic game. The player finds himself in an open world level, in which he is free to roam around and find the scarce resources he needs to survive.

Resources, NPC camps and enemy camps are all generated randomly across the level. NPCs interact with each other and with the resources they find. Enemies attack NPCs when they cross paths.
